Almost three quarters of all employees work in the very strong service sector, with around 2,000 in the commercial and transport sector and around 2% in agriculture.
In contrast to many other towns, Merzig’s pedestrianised town centre is characterised by independent retailers, many of them run by generations of the same family. This varied and distinctive retail structure makes the centre of Merzig very attractive for customers. The retail offering is supplemented by excellent specialist shops and markets around the pedestrian zone and on out-of-town developments.
As the main town in the district, Merzig is the seat of the Merzig-Wadern district authority, as well as having a variety of other public and private facilities in terms of care, services, schools and administration.
