Kreuzberg als Weinberg – Kreuzberg Vineyards
Old traditions brought back to life
For more than 100 years, particularly around the middle of the 19th century, well tended vineyards were part of the landscape of Merzig. There is documentary evidence that the origins of this tradition go right back to the 12th century.
A group of wine and cultural enthusiasts from Merzig (the “Wein und Kulturfreunde Kreuzberg Merzig e.V.”) set themselves the task of resurrecting this ancient tradition and have already achieved some significant successes. A Merzig employment initiative (BIM) uncovered the old easement staircase, which leads to the memorial below the Kreuzberg Chapel dedicated to chapel’s benefactor. On the Southern slope of the Merzig Kreuzberg, 1,100 vines have been planted, and have been producing good Merzig wine for six years now.
