Evangelische Kirche Merzig – Merzig Protestant Church

On Hochwaldstraße in Merzig since 1865

The officially recognised Protestant church community dates back to 1851. It originally comprised all protestants living in the Merzig-Wadern, Saarburg and Perl districts. Reflecting the size of the protestant community at that time, the Neo-Gothic protestant church on Hochwaldstraße was built between 1863 and 1865, designed by architect Carl-Friedrich Müller. The foundation stone for the protestant church was laid on 28th July 1863. It was formally dedicated on 9th November 1865. The design (hall church with vestibule, ridge turret and recessed neo-Gothic chancel) was designed by district architect Carl-Friedrich Müller. The crucifix and candelabra are gifts from then-Prussian King Wilhelm I and Queen Augusta. The bell was donated by the Gustav-Adolf Frauenwerk.

From 1948-49, extensive war damage had to be repaired. Unfortunately the pinnacles on the buttresses, decorated with crockets and elaborate finials, had to be removed. A thorough renovation of the sandstone façade was carried out in 2007. A new floor was then laid in 2010. During this work, remains of the original tiles were discovered (under the steps to the gallery). They were reconstructed and integrated into the new floor. Visitors who want to look around the church should ring the bell at the community office or the vicarage (behind the church).
