More than just a place to borrow books
Of course, the main function of Merzig library is to look after the town’s central media and lending collection, approx. 48,000 items in total (books, CDs, CD-ROMs, audio books, magazines, newspapers, parlour games, Nintendo DS games).
With regular readings by authors, talks and child theatre events, it is also a centre for communication and a place for all ages to get together. With almost a third of residents registered as readers, our library is right at the top in a national comparison.
Facilities for infants / pre-school children / school children
For young people, Merzig library provides a wide range of picture books, audio books, CDs of children’s songs, collections of verses and finger play, as well as books and advice for parents to encourage language development and literacy.
Other regular events: Picture book cinema with craft afternoon, play afternoon with children’s theatre and author readings.
With its “Bibliotheca Judaica”, Merzig library has a collection of literature on all areas of Jewish culture and history that is unique in Saarland, a legacy of Merzig’s long Jewish tradition; before the 2nd World War, the town was home to one of the largest Jewish communities on the Saar.
